Initially created as the Department of Extension in 1912, it gained Faculty status in 1975.

In the beginning, Extension was known for their Traveling Library and Magic Lantern shows. Extension would travel all over rural Alberta with books and educational films for families. Many rural Albertans were grateful since they would not have had the means necessary to travel into the cities to take advantage of the libraries and classes through the University.

As Extension’s mission to reach the people of Alberta continued, they founded CKUA radio in 1928. They were one of the first groups to use radio as a medium for education. Though CKUA left the University in 1945, they still maintain a close relationship with Extension to this day.

Extension also founded the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1956 and added many certificate programs including Banking, Personnel Administration and Local Government in the mid 1960s.

The Faculty added the Information Access and Privacy Protection (IAPP) Certificate in 2000 and began hosting the Access and Privacy Conference in 2003.

We chose this because in the access and privacy world, one division’s actions affect the performance of all other parts. Just like a set of dominos.

Dominoes are believed to have originated in China in the 12th century, though Egyptian or Arabian origins are also theorized. Dominoes appeared in Italy in the early eighteenth century, and spread to the rest of Europe throughout the remainder of the 1700′s, becoming one of the most popular games in both family parlors and pubs alike.

The word “domino” appears to have derived from the traditional appearance of the tiles – black dots on a white background – which is reminiscent of a “domino” (a kind of hood) worn by Christian priests.

Today, dominoes are played all over the world. It is particularly popular in Latin America, where dominoes is considered the national game of many Caribbean countries. There are domino tournaments held annually in many countries, and there are numerous local domino clubs in many cities around the globe (Historical information from here)
